Stones Throw 18 Year Anniversary Show Recap

Stones Throw records was celebrating it’s 18th birthday in Montreal on Wednesday, March 5th, with a stop at SAT as part of the « Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton » tour. Legendary founder Peanut Butter Wolf, producer Knxwledge, and MC/producers J Rocc and JonWayne turned up for a display of beats and rhymes.

I got there late, so I unfortunately missed the opening act, which was Knxwledge. Apparently he gave a great live set. Not surprising from the Detroit producer.
When I did get there, JonWayne was stepping to the plate. The hard spitting California MC started by displaying some fine live work, looping and sampling before us. His all world producing and rapping skills were in display, so was his total lack of stage presence which ironically makes his performance that more interesting. The barefoot MC started his rapping display by going at that Kanye beat Numbers on the board, and ended with some older tracks from his two first albums. All in all a great performance, if you don’t know him check him out, his last album was pretty decent.

J Rocc followed on the decks, doing his thing. His DJ set was as diverse as the label he’s signed to. Playing some Dilla beats, some Jill Scott, some house, some garage, J Rocc really got the crowd going by playing to it.
Peanut Butter Wolf followed with another awesome set, mixing soul to old school hip hop. Definitely, the highlight of the night, PBW received a great welcome from the smaller crowd who stayed until the end. The result was a warm and rooted concert, far from pretentious, something the label has accustomed us to over the years.
