Interview: I don’t even notice that I am a “female” rapper – Starrlight (Netherlands)

One of the best things of social media, is knowing what’s happening in music on an international scale, not to mention, being able to interact with artists from other countries. I came across Starrlight as I was scrolling through my FB searching for new music. Cincinnati rapper Lord Lhus had posted a Youtube link for a track of hers, so, I decided to give it a try. It was really worth it. Now, I want to share to all our peeps who follow Elementality, a little bit about her story and music with this exclusive interview. Before continuing, I wanna give a shout to Starrlight for not only accepting in doing this written interview, but for taking the time to answer the questions.

E: How did you get involved with Hip-Hop culture ?

S: I’ve been listening to Hip-Hop since I was a little girl.

E: Which were your biggest local (Dutch) influences ?

S: I don’t really have local influences cause I never listened to dutch Hip-Hop.

E: Which were your biggest international influences ?

S: MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Da Brat, Lil’Kim, Foxy Brown, Missy Elliot. Tech N9ne, Busta Rhymes, Method Man, Twista and a lot more, but you get the point.

E: What is the message you want to send with your music ?

S: I send different messages with my music but I think the most important message is to stay true to yourself no matter what anyone else thinks about you or your music.

E: How would you define your style ?

S: One of a kind with a raw edge. Even tho I get compared to other femcee’s a lot I rather not put myself in a box. And just love to explore different styles. But if you’re really looking for a word to describe it, it’ll be: “Starrlight”

E: How did you make the contact with East Garden Music and PSL ?

S: Well, we had to perform at the same event and the rest is history…

E: How has the public responded to your recently released EP Light of the Stars ?

S: Very overwhelmed by all the reactions I get. They are all very positive. Never knew I touched souls like that.

E: What inspired you during the making of this EP ?

S: My entire life…

E: Why did you decide to make the EP free for the public ?

S: Due to the fact that I am a “new” artist in the music industry and wanted to reach a lot of people. I wouldn’t buy an album of an artist I never heard before. Plus money isn’t the reason I make music.

E: How has it been being a female rapper? Do you consider you get the respect you deserve ?

S: I don’t even notice that I am a “female” rapper, only when someone reminds me, like now. I can say that I’ve been received very well.

E: With how many producers have you worked with ?

S: Da landlord, Trebeats, Bass & Shaw and a couple more.

E: How’s the Hip-Hop scene in the Netherlands ?

S: It’s okay, I think it can use a little help though.

E: Do you rap in other languages besides English ?

S: No, it always has been English.

E: Do you get enough attention in the Netherlands rapping in English ?

S: Yes, I get more attention than expected. But that’s because I don’t expect anything from anyone. So there never will be disappointment.

E: Any upcoming projects in the works ?

S: At this moment im just enjoyin the fact that my EP and 1st official video got released. But I do have a LOT more in store for you guys.

Starrlight’s first official video, Dear Life, featuring Shaquille Taylor

E: With which local artist(s) (Dutch) would you like to collaborate ?

S: Hmmmm…good one. There are several artists I got my eye on. Stay tuned!

E: With which international artist(s) would like to collaborate ?

S: Tech n9ne, without a doubt in my mind! He’s a genius!! But of course there are a lot more I would love to work with.

E: What do you see yourself doing in 5 years ? 10 years ?

S: Time will tell..
