Clay And Friends With James Potvin – Hay Stack Blues ( Feat. Marilou) [Video]

It’s fall, school’s back in session, people feeling the seasonal depression. The blues is in the air. In their new installment of the All Day Jam Series, Clay And Friends take it into a slightly different direction by combining combine their signature funky hip hop sounds with blues, an appropriate blend for a narrative song about the dark side of living in the city.

The video for Hay Stack Blues is very relatable for me, as it’s filmed in NDG/Côte-des-Neiges, an area I lived in for a few years, and partly in Université de Montréal, the school I just graduated from. This is the story of the life of many people just like me, who are not so fond of the feeling of alienation as an anonymous University student in the winter.

Clay tells the story in rap form while Marilou carries the chorus over James Potvin’s bluesy riffs on his six-string guitar. Pascal Boisseau plays the bass and of course, Aydell does his thing on the beatbox.

There are a lot of great buskers in this city, but none that really stand out as much as C & F. They are energetic, spontaneous and bring contagiously funky rhythms every time they are playing a show or taking over some busy downtown Montreal intersection.

The song was recorded by Frederic Messier at Silver Stag Records. The animation is brought to life by Karimi Nion from K.I.D.S.
