Aaron Cohen – Potential Fans [Video]

“Potential Fans” is the newest video from rapper Aaron Cohen, a Seattle native who recently moved to Queens, NY. The slow-paced, heavy-based instrumental is produced by Montréal’s own Tommy Kruise and Jared Soule directed the video.

The clip was premiered by Noisey, Vice mag’s digital music channel. The mp3 can be downloaded on Bandcamp:

“Unemployment” (feat. Spaceman and ABGOHARD, prod. NDLDRP) displays his tendancy for bravado and sensational lyrics. Definitely recession-proof music for the urban worker:

His track “Feminist” was produced by A$AP TY BEATS, who also produced A$AP Rocky’s “Peso” and “Purple Swag”:

These videos are part of the “Murk” album, Cohen’s self-proclaimed death sentence for other rappers, released in September 2012.

Cohen’s 2011 mixtape “Crack” was well received even though most of its beats were stolen from old school rappers.  “I’m givin’ old rappers flash backs / wishin’ they could back track / and take the tracks back.” (Never Should Have Let Me Go/Crack Mixtape). This is one of many lyrics where he playfully emphasizes the need for new music to push forward. Though he has nothing against old school rappers, he has often pointed to rap’s tendency to constantly evolve as generations distinguish themselves from their predecessors.

The skinny, red-bearded indie rapper makes me wonder what would happen if Sean Price and Macklemore were the same person. He exemplifies the idea of east-meets-west with a sound that blends influences, from coast to coast. He’s definitely got the Seattle flavour which blends with his monotone New York sound. His bars are grimey and versatile while reflecting today’s chopped and screwed vocal patterns we’ve gotten used to in the Northeast since ASAP Rocky took the game by storm.

With a moniker like Aaron Cohen (real name no gimmicks) you know this is 100% ko$her.
